Titre : Advances in Ironmaking and Steelmaking Processes Type de document : document électronique Auteurs : Pasquale Cavaliere, Auteur Editeur : Basel [Switzerland] : MDPI Année de publication : 2023 Importance : 220 p. Présentation : ill., couv. ill. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-0365-7549-0 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Open Access Publications Tags : Ironmaking Steelmaking Processes hydrogen decarbonized energy systems nuclear energy Index. décimale : 672 Fer, acier, autres alliages ferreux Résumé : In recent years, ironmaking and steelmaking have witnessed the incorporation of various new processes and technologies that can be operated and organized in different combinations depending on the properties of raw materials and the required quality of the final products. Indications from the steel industry and local and global government institutions suggest that the breakthrough technologies for decarbonization will be based on new fuels and energy vectors. For CO2-lean process routes, three major solutions have been identified: decarbonizing, whereby coal would be replaced by hydrogen or electricity in the hydrogen reduction or electrolysis of iron ore processes; the introduction of CCS technology; and the use of sustainable biomass. Today, hydrogen-based steelmaking is a potential low-carbon and economically attractive route, especially in countries where natural gas is cheap. By considering systems for increasing energy efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of steel production, CO2 emissions may be greatly reduced by hydrogen-based steel production if hydrogen is generated by means of carbon-free and renewable sources. Currently, the development of the hydrogen economy has received a great deal of attention in that H2 is considered a promising alternative to replace fossil fuels. Based on hydrogen, the “hydrogen economy” is a promising clean energy carrier for decarbonized energy systems if the hydrogen used is produced from renewable energy sources or coupled with carbon capture and storage (CCS) or nuclear energy. Titre : Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking Type de document : document électronique Auteurs : Thomas Echterhof, Auteur ; Ville-Valtteri Visuri, Auteur Editeur : Basel [Switzerland] : MDPI Année de publication : 2025 Importance : 174 P. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-7258-6231-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Open Access Publications Tags : steelmaking electric arc furnace sustainability biocoke direct reduced iron modelling process optimization Index. décimale : 672 Fer, acier, autres alliages ferreux Résumé : Electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking is one of the most important steelmaking routes and currently accounts for approximately thirty percent of worldwide crude steel production. The share of scrap-based EAF steelmaking is expected to continue rising in the coming decades. In addition, EAF steelmaking provides the basis for plans to melt direct reduced iron (DRI) produced using hydrogen reduction. Accompanied by an editorial, this Reprint presents eight peer-reviewed articles from the Special Issue “Electric Arc Furnace Steelmaking”, published in the journal Metals. Présentation : ill. ISBN/ISSN/EAN : 978-3-031-35479-3 Langues : Anglais (eng) Catégories : Open Access Publications Tags : Industry 4.0 Steel Industry Decarbonisation Sustainability Digitalisation Workforce Development Circular Economy Technological Innovation Skill Formation Economic Resilience Index. décimale : 672 Fer, acier, autres alliages ferreux Résumé : This open access book gathers original contributions focused on the transition of the European steel industry to Industry 4.0. It not only investigates how Industry 4.0 can enhance productivity, cost-saving, and sustainability in the steel industry but also helps to comprehend its broad consequences on employment, education and training, human resources, economic resilience and decarbonisation. The content engages with the international debate on Industry 4.0 through the lens of the steel industry from a multidisciplinary perspective. It encourages a scientifically grounded critical approach and includes contributions from humanities and technical disciplines, with a focus on the social dimensions of the phenomenon. This book draws strength from up-to-date international research projects and adopts a strong industry-based perspective, providing a thorough description and analysis of the state of the art of the European steel industry. It also analyzes the trends, outcomes, opportunities, and criticalities arising with the transition to the Industry 4.0 paradigm. The book is primarily based on the results of the European Steel Skills Agenda (ESSA) skills alliance project co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and supported by the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP).
